Abstract Brojne ljudske aktivnosti među kojima se ističu turizam i intenzivan ribolov ostavljaju veliki utjecaj na bogatstvo različitih morskih staništa uključujući, pelagijske i bentičke zajednice.
Abstract (english) Numerous human activities, most notably tourism and intensive fishing, leave a major impact on the richness of various marine habitats, including pelagic and benthic communities. Also, harmful fishing equipment, poor control of existing legislation, as well as scarce estimates of biological stocks in the sea and their overuse lead to a detrimental effect on the entire marine environment. Island of Pag is the only island located in two counties and it has a large surface area, the fishing data in the area of the island of Pag are very modest and insufficient. Consequently, the research part of the work was carried out by conducting surveys with fisherrmen on the island of Pag, about the fish species caught, their quantity and the fishing gear used from the 1960s to the present. The aim of this final paper was to gather as much information as possible on the abundance and diversity of ichthyofauna and other marine species by fisherrmen from the island of Pag. The purpose of the paper was to determine whether there has been a quantitative and qualitative change in marine species caught during the time period (since 1960). According to the research, during 1980s and 1990s the amount of fish caught in that time was double, almost triple in comparison to present. Consequently, the number of fishermen who have caught two or three times less fish has risen in the last decade. Also, the fishers have claimed that the fish caught in the past was larger than today, and there has been a noticeable rise in the population of invasive species during the last decade, such as the yellow barracuda (S. viridensis) and the bluefish (P. saltratrix). The existing knowledge in the field of fisheries contributes to better management and establishment of sustainable fisheries management in the Republic of Croatia, and this research will further highlight the importance of acquiring and propagating the local ecological knowledge about fisheries in the area of the Island of Pag for understanding the long-term changes in the ecosystem of the mentioned and other areas
