Abstract Neben Hamlet, Faust und Don Quijote gehört Don Juan zu den vier bekanntesten
In diesem Werk taucht
Abstract (english) Along with Hamlet, Faust, and Don Quixote, Don Juan is one of the four most
famous literary heroes, one whose main goal is win over a woman’s heart. The elements
and the characters of the earlier versions have been further developed in the modern
versions, however, Don Juan motifs such as the womanizer trait, the art of seduction,
women’s beauty, and the character of the servant, still persist. In his work Don Juan
(erzählt von ihm selbst) (2004) Peter Handke, one of the best known Austrian authors,
places his hero in the modern age of the 21st century. Don Juan is presented as the
narrator’s guest, who recounts the adventures he lived through during a span of seven
days. For Handke’s Don Juan, the woman represents passion, although he is not
presented as a classic seducer; he seduces with his eyes. In this work, Don Juan appears
as an orphan, as a sad “vagabond”, a sentimental father of a death child, who admires
the woman’s beauty, while at the same time being in a constant pursuit for the woman
ideal. The hero of Robert Menasse’s Don Juan de la Mancha oder Die Erziehung der
Lust (2007) is called Nathan. In his fifties, he has been married for thirteen years, is
having an affair with Christa, and works as a newspaper editor. Menasse’s Don Juan is
in a serious crisis; he is looking for pleasure, dragging himself from one woman to
another, while always remaining unsatisfied. Hence he decides to visit a
psychotherapist. The reader follows his life story from childhood until the present.
Nathan talks about the events in his childhood, the relations towards his mother, father
and towards women. Menasse presents us with a completely different Don Juan, nontraditional
seducer, who was twice married, and is in constant pursuit for ideal of
pleasure. Both Handke and Menasse present their readers with the psychological side of
their characters, introducing the psychoanalytic method as part of the whole Don Juan
thematic. Their Don Juan’s do not wish to hurt women and do not find what they have
been seeking – woman ideal and the ideal of pleasure, respectfully. According to
classical motifs, which refer to the Don Juan theme, both Handke and Menasse
managed to create a new picture of Don Juan.
Abstract (croatian) Don Juan pripada uz Hamleta, Fausta i Don Quijota četirima najpoznatijim
U djelu Don Juan (erzählt von ihm selbst) (2004) Peter
sedam dana. Za Handkeovog Don Juana žena predstavlja strast, iako on nije prikazan
kao klasični zavodnik; on zavodi očima.
psihoterapeutkinju. Čitatelji prate njegovu životnu priču od malena do sad. Nathan
pripovjeda o svojim događajima u djetinjstvu, odnosima prema majci, ocu i prema
ženama. Menasse prikazuje jednog potpuno drugačijeg Don Juana, netradicionalnog
Handke i Menasse daju čitateljima uvid u psihološku sliku njihovih likova, uvodeći u
djela psihoanalitičku metodu kao dio Don Juanove tematike. Njihovi likovi Don Juana
ne žele povrijediti žene i nisu našli ono za čim tragaju- ženski ideal odnosno ideal
zadovoljstva.
