INTRODUCTION: Stress and its presence in the workplace of nurses has a significant impact on the quality of work and their effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this research are: to examine the degree of burnout at work in nurses and technicians, and the frequency of occurrence of symptoms of burnout, to examine the correlation of burnout and the frequency of occurrence of particular groups of symptoms (physical, behavioral and emotional), to examine differences in the degree of burnout with respect to professional qualifications, job type, position, age and length of service. METHODS: The sample consists of eighty-seven (N = 87) nurses and technicians employed at Zadar General Hospital. The measuring instruments used in this research are survey questionnaires: a general questionnaire, a Maslachin Combustion Inventory and an Intensity of Combustion Symptoms. Participation in the study was voluntary and completely anonymous. Descriptive statistics methods and non-parametric statistical tools Mann-Withney test and Spearman correlation test were used in the data processing. RESULTS: The results indicate a statistically significant difference in the respondents in terms of place of employment, age of the respondents and length of service. Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was found with regard to the respondents' qualifications and the type of work they do. CONCLUSION: The presence of burnout and the intensity of burnout symptoms in nursing staff are related to their workplace as well as their age and length of service. Continuous monitoring of stress levels and the factors that cause it are required as well as intervention in terms of reducing their presence.
