Abstract Usmena je književnost ona književnost koju je narod stoljećima stvarao, čuvao i prenosio budućim naraštajima usmenim putem, dok je nisu zapisali skupljači narodnoga blaga. No, još uvijek nije sve zapisano.
Abstract (english) Oral literature is the one that people have been creating for centuries, preserved and passed on to future generations through the oral method until it was written down by the collectors of the folk treasure. But, not all is written yet. Oral literature speaks much more about people than it is believed; it speaks about folk culture and about human in general. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to determine the extent to which selected songs from Neretva area song books, collected and written down on the research field during this research, vitness to the life, position and customs of women in the valley of the Neretva river. The paper presents some of the songs that have already been written on the field of mentioned area but also presents songs which are introduced and written down for the first time in this work. Most of the collected songs are, by tipe, songs that speaks about love and are sung while working. This work features 41 collected songs and 9 double verse song. The research determines that collected songs faithfully show the life of the women from the Neretva valley as it used to be; their hard working class position, customs, love troubles and everyday jobs and products they were making. The songs mostly sing about „lađa“ boat steering, picking up the plants, washing clothes on the river Neretva, gathering tangerine, work in the vineyard, cattle pasture, love troubles of the youth, arranged marriages, mother's curse of the dauther. Mara and Ivan (Ivo) are the most common characters of oral songs, while „osmerac“ and „deseterac“ are the most common verse types of oral songs of this area. The paper confirmes the thesis that oral literature speaks a lot about the time in which it was created and about human in general. The purpose of this work is also to try to preserve from oblivion, through collected songs, full richness of oral literature and cultural heritage of Neretva valley in general which is revived only through performances of cultural and artistic brotherhoods of this area. The aim is also to preserve the memory on strong, emotional and above all hard-working women of Neretva valley.
