Piston and plunger pumps are pumps that are using piston or plunger for fluid suction and discharge. One working cycle consist of suction and compression stroke. Piston and plunger pumps are type of positive displacement pumps with reciprocating part. Parts of which pump is made are connecting rod and piston or just plunger, cylinder, packing, suction and discharge valve, suction and discharge pipes. There are many types of piston and plunger pumps. Piston and plunger can be divided according to the driving mechanism, horizontal and vertical, number of cylinders, according to the working mode. The advantages of piston and plunger pumps are self-priming, able to maintain high pressures in the system and withstand liquids of relatively high viscosity and temperature. The disadvantages are that they are bulky and heavy, intermittent supply and complicated production. Axial and radial are used for bigger pressures. Cycle of suction and discharge occurs by rotating the shaft, which acts on the pistons.
