Abstract (croatian) Poznati njemački pisac Heinrich Mann autor je trilogije "Božice" (1903.) kojoj pripada i roman "Dijana". Radnja romana počinje u gradu Zadru (Zara), tada glavnom gradu Kraljevine Dalmacije. Slika društva prikazana u ovom romanu Heinricha Manna u velikoj mjeri odgovara stvarnoj slici europskog društva Fin de siècle-a.
Abstract (english) The famous German writer, Heinrich Mann, is the author of "Goddesses" (1903), a trilogy which includes the novel "Diana". The character of the Duchess Assyʼs, has up to now been interpreted as Manns criticism of the social irresponsibility of the privileged at the verge of the century. What characterizes this novel is Manns ability to take real historical events and historical figures and include them into the fictive plot of his novel. That is exactly the act that gives the novel authenticity. The story begins in Zadar (Zara), then known as the capital of the Kingdom of Dalmatia. By developing the story in his novel the author tackles with real, existing social and political problems of Dalmatia, but also with the problems of south-eastern Europe. Furthermore, Mann criticises in his novel also the upper class at the verge of the century by depicting the immorality of capricious political potentates, but also priests. Criticism is also pointed at the decadent art which does not have its originality and whose sole purpose was that of a commercial character. The image of society shown in this novel by Heinrich Mann largely reflects the real image of European society at the Fin de siècle period.
