Abstract
This paper aims to show the participants' experiences concerning the language policies of their country of origin and their host country. In order to achieve this aim, the paper is divided into two main parts. The first part is theoretical and is mostly concerned with the language policies of the U.S., the South African Republic, and Croatia. It also encompasses the role of language policies in education. Moreover, the theoretical part also discusses the migration processes in general and the changes one’s identity undergoes during and after the transition. The second part is focused more on the research conducted for the purposes of this paper and on participants’ personal experiences related to the topic. Ten anonymous participants took part in the research via email. All participants are now English-Croatian bilinguals and they compared the language policy in their country of origin with their host country. Furthermore, they shared their experiences concerned with different aspects of life in Croatia, mostly focusing on language policies and educational system in Croatia.

Cilj ovog rada je prikazati iskustva ispitanika na temu jezične politike zemlje njihovog podrijetla kao i zemlje u koju su došli živjeti. U svrhu ostvarivanja tog cilja rad je podijeljen na dva dijela. Prvi dio je teorijski te se fokus ponajviše stavlja na jezičnu politiku SAD-a, Južnoafričke Republike te Hrvatske. Također se obuhvaća uloga jezične politike u obrazovanju, a osim toga teorijski dio općenito opisuje migracijske procese te promjene koje se događaju u sklopu identiteta tijekom i nakon tranzicije. Drugi dio se fokusira na istraživanje provedeno u svrhu ovog rada te na osobna iskustva ispitanika povezanih s temom. Deset anonimnih ispitanika je sudjelovalo u istraživanju putem električne pošte. Svi ispitanici su englesko- hrvatski dvojezičari koji su usporedili jezične politike zemlje svog podrijetla te zemlje u koju su došli živjeti. Nadalje, podijelili su svoja iskustva o različitim dijelovima života u Hrvatskoj, a ponajviše su se usredotočili na jezične politike i obrazovni sustav u Hrvatskoj.
