Abstract (english) Fan identity can be defined as an experience of similarity, closeness and attachement to other supporters of certain team but also to a certain team. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between fan identity and attitude toward violence, more specifically, its individual dimensions - machismo and acceptance of violence. Machismo represents a specific aspect of masculine ideology which implicates that violence is characteristic of strenght, while fear and nonviolence indicate weakness. Furthermore, acceptance of violence consists of supporting and justifying violence as an acceptable behavior in media, sport and everyday life. Two measures were used in the research: The Team Identification Scale (UNI) and The Maudsley Violence Questionnaire (MVQ). A total of 206 football supporters (153 male and 53 female), aged between 15 and 69 years, of which 98 members of organized croatian supporters clubs (47.57) and 108 sympathizers (52.42%) of croatian football clubs took part in the study. Results show that there is a significant positive relationship between fan identity and attitude toward violence, more specifficaly, its individual dimensions - machismo and acceptance of violence. More preciously, the higher level of fan identity is associated with higher level of machismo. Also, the higher level of fan identity is associated with higher acceptance of violence. Except that, it has been found that there is no significant difference in the level of fan identity between men and women that took part in this study. In other words, male and female football supporters equally high identify themselves with their favourite team. Furthermore, results suggest that there is a significant negative relationship between fan identity and age which means that younger supporters identify more stronly with their favourite team.
