Abstract (english) Tourism is a part of culture and is based on diversity. This means that its logical consequence is interculturalism which implies knowledge and respect for another culture as you have for your own. Being a tourist nowadays does not represent a huge leap, i.e. a change related to a new environment, new people, new customs, culture, food, etc. Every new generation of tourists, or people travelling around the world looking for new spaces and experiences, carries shock less and less. This is due to the fact that an economic situation - lower travel costs, early independence and also a political situation, enables more and more young people to travel independently to distant destinations. Culture shock may appear as a psychological consequence which is a result of exposure to a foreign and unknown environment, and it may also affect the local population due to an interaction with tourists. Its intensity and duration differ from person to person, and they also depend on differences among cultures. Culture shock can be avoided or at least mitigated by learning about the culture you are visiting. It is important to know that this psychological consequence does not necessarily have to be a negative experience. It has some positive aspects since the person directly learns about the culture in which he or she is and thus gains a profound travel experience. If it is a negative experience, then tourism at some destination may suffer, and in order to avoid it, it is important to raise awareness of the local people and tourists. This graduate thesis examines whether culture shock affects tourism on the island of Dugi otok and in which situations it occurs. Interesting and funny answers say that this is a lowintensity experience since respondents come from Europe, i.e. from similar cultures.
