Abstract Uvod: Nealkoholna masna bolest jetre (NAFLD) najzastupljenija je kronična bolest jetre koja pogađa četvrtinu svjetskog stanovništva i smatra se ozbiljnim javnozdravstvenim problemom.
Abstract (english) Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most prevalent chronic liver disease that affects a quarter of world ´s population and is considered a serious public health problem. About 90% of NAFLD patients also suffer from metabolic syndrome, including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. NAFLD is a multisystem disease, often associated with kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It can progress from simple steatosis to more severe forms such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) which can lead to to cirrhosis or hepatochellular carcinoma. Aim of the study: to investigate the effect of proper nutrition on the values of laboratory findings of people with NAFLD. Materials and methods: The study was conducted retrospectively during the period from March to May 2024 at the Zadar General Hospital in the Department of Gastroenterology. Patients of this department were included as well as general data (age, gender) and laboratory findings (ALT, AST, GGT) were analyzed at the first and control examination after education on proper nutrition. The data collected by searching the electronic medical records were then compared. Results: 50 people participated in the study, with 70% men and 30% women. The age of the participants varied from younger than 30 years (4%) to older than 81 years (2%). The analysis of laboratory findings showed the following: ALT: 70,2% of subjects had normal values at the first examination, 51,1% at the control. There was no statistically significant difference between the values at the first and control visits (p=0.109), as well as by gender (p=0.151) or age (p=0.368). AST: 68.9% of subjects had normal values at the first examination, 65,1% at the control. There were no statistically significant differences between examinations (p=0.572), gender (p=0.905), or age (p=0.720). GGT: 45% of subjects had normal values at the first examination, and 41,5% at the control. No statistically significant difference was found between examinations (p=0.231), gender (p=0.831), or age (p=0.264). Conclusion: The study showed that education on proper nutrition did not significantly improve laboratory findings in patients with NAFLD because no statistically significant differences in liver enzyme values were found. Adopting healthy eating habits is difficult due to a lack of understanding of the diagnosis, emotional and financial obstacles, and stressful circumstances. It was concluded that education on proper nutrition did not significantly affect changes in laboratory findings. Further research with a larger number of subjects and the development of preventive programs to promote healthy dietary patterns and early detection of diseases are recommended.
