Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
The aim of the present thesis is to analyze female characters in five different 19th century novels (Adolphe, Madame Bovary, The Red and The Black, A Woman of Thirthy, La Curée) and one novella (The Deserted Woman) according to the ideas of Simone Beauvoir. Considering the fact that Simone de Beauvoir in her famous work The Second Sex (Volume 1) present the woman’s position from the primitive communities to 19th century, some of her main ideas will serve as the guiding principle for the analysis of six heroines: de Constant’s Elleonore, Flaubert’s Emma, Stendhal’s Mrs de Rênal and Mathilde de La Mole, Balzac’s Julia and Duchess de Beauséant as well as Zola‘s Renée. It is interesting how the above mentioned novelists present the position of the 19th century French woman throughout their novels. Even though they loved and desired to be loved they have failed to achieve their dreams due to the fact they were victims of the time they lived in, victims of their husbands, lovers, patriarchal attitudes, social norms, and above all, victims because they were women in 19th century.
Parallel abstract (Croatian)
