Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal abnormality in humans, resulting from an extra part or a whole extra copy of the 21st chromosome. It occurs in approximately 1 in 600 to 800 newborns. These children often have congenital heart defects, intellectual difficulties, abnormalities in the gastrointestinal system, weak muscle tone, dysmorphic facial features and respiratory issues. Down syndrome is not a disease but rather a condition that requires support to alleviate difficulties, and associated conditions. Upon realizing the presence of the syndrome in a child, parents undergo a range of emotions and adjustment phases. Uncertainty about the future and fear of how all the mentioned challenges will impact their family life are not uncommon. It is crucial to involve parents in support groups and introduce them to other families who have a child with Down syndrome. This allows fit the exchange of experiences, securing support throughout the child's development and empowering their own capabilities. In this final thesis, I will describe Down syndrome and the nursing care provided to children and adolescents with this condition. considering the significant role parents play in caring for their child, special attention will be given to parental care. The impact of the diagnosis on parents will be discussed, as well as sibling interventions aimed at empowering parents in their caregiving role. Expertise, effective communication, and empathy on the part of medical professionals, especially when informing parents about the condition's presence in their child, encouraging them, and educating them about their child's condition, are of paramount importance throughout the entire care process.
