Abstract

Today tourism is a global phenomenon, and because of its main features such as heterogeneity, mobility and flexibility, nowadays we can distinguish between a large number of selective types of tourism. Cultural tourism is just one of the types of tourism, which, as the name itself suggests, originated from two words: culture and tourism. Although culture is often not the main motive for travel, it is present on almost every journey. Northwest Croatia is a region that includes five counties, and due to its position, it was of great importance during Croatian history. This historical importance has left behind a rich cultural and historical heritage, but also a significant culture and customs. The tourism of Northwest Croatia is still relatively neglected when compared to the tourism on the Croatian coast. In 2014 and 2015 this area attracted just under 2% out of the total number of tourists at the national level, and its biggest limiting factors are the lack of accommodation facilities and insufficiently developed tourist offer. There are about 100 castles in the Northwest Croatia. Most of them are in neglected or ruined state. Some of the castles that are renovated today have a new purpose. Due to the similarity of the landscape and the wealth of castles in one smaller area, benchmarking has been made with two important tourist regions: Bavaria in Germany and Loire in France. These two regions are an example which indicates that each castle does not have to exclusively take up the role of a museum to be attractive. Research was conducted for the purpose of this paper that proved there is an interest in visiting the Northwest of Croatia, but that the biggest problem lies in a small or non-existent offer of excursions and travel arrangements as well as in poor transport links from other parts of Croatia. Assumptions that the main problems of non-valorisation of castles lie in funding and unresolved ownership relations which cause castles to stand empty and abandoned have also been confirmed. Castles have a large potential and as such should be used in every region. For them to be used even in an unrenovated state, it is important to best use that what currently exists to create an attraction that could raise funds for further renovation and valorisation. Great help in creating a recognizable tourist destination would be provided by the platform conducted by tourist boards of counties in Northwest Croatia.
