Abstract
Online video games present themselves as interactive environments conducive to language learning as they provide their users with exposure to the target language through various modalities. Playing video games may also lead to incidental vocabulary learning (IVL). This study combined quantitative and qualitative research methods with the aim of investigating IVL through playing video games in a non-instructional setting among Croatian high school ESL learners. Additionally, the study aimed to investigate the attitudes of Croatian ESL learners with regard to IVL while playing online video games. For the purposes of the study, the MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) World of Warcraft was used as a source of meaning-focused input. The sample included ten ESL high school learners. The instruments used for the purpose of the study included two vocabulary tests (pre-gaming and post-gaming) and semi-structured interviews. The results from the pre- and post-gaming tests indicated that online gaming leads to IVL, which is facilitated by the frequency of gaming. The results also suggest that IVL is facilitated by word exposure frequency. Likewise, it appears that words with higher exposure frequency are more easily retained. The results from the semistructured interviews revealed a positive outlook by learners with regard to learning vocabulary through playing video games.

Online videoigre predstavljaju interaktivna okruženja koja omogućuju učenje jezika, budući da svoje korisnike izlažu ciljnom jeziku kroz različite vrste modaliteta. Igranjem videoigara javlja se slučajno učenje vokabulara. Istraživanje kombinira kvantitativne i kvalitativne istraživačke metode s ciljem istraživanja nenamjernog učenja vokabulara kroz igranje videoigara u nenastavnom okruženju među hrvatskim srednjoškolcima engleskog kao drugog jezika. Osim toga, cilj ovog rada bio je istražiti mišljenja hrvatskih učenika u vezi s nenamjernim učenjem vokabulara tijekom igranja online videoigara. Za potrebe studije MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) World of Warcraft korištena je kao izvor jezičnog unosa usmjerenog na značenje. Uzorak je uključivao deset učenika engleskog jezika iz srednjih škola. Za potrebe ovog istraživanja korištena su dva testa vokabulara (test prije i nakon igre) i intervjui. Rezultati testova provedenih prije i nakon igranja videoigre pokazali su da igranje videoigara dovodi do nenamjernog učenja vokabulara, te da je učenje vokabulara povezano s učestalošću igranja. Rezultati također sugeriraju da ponavljanje riječi utječe na nenamjerno učenje vokabulara. Isto tako, rezultati pokazuju da se lakše usvajaju riječi ko je se ponavljaju češće. Rezultati intervjua otkrili su da učenici smatraju da je učenje vokabulara kroz igranje videoigara moguće.
