Abstract

Family and parenthood are constantly changing under the historical, economical, technological and other circumstances. During the past few years, there has been a decrease in the croatian natality, the general population has been getting older and the number of children has been decreasing by every year. The youth that represents the future generation of parents are facing a value crisis, unemployment, and they are on the crossing between the modern and the traditional. The aim of this research was to examine the youth's stand on the different spheres of their future parenthood. Conducting a survey, 334 students of the University of Zadar and the University of Zagreb of the average age of 22 have participated. Around 70 percent of the participants have said they wish to become parents one day. The independent variable has shown how, compared to other groups, women, religious people, people raised in the traditionally structured families, people with a higher number of siblings, and engaged or married people have the greatest desire for parenthood, they show the biggest interest for the emotional parenthood, and are the least worried for work and the financial situation in parenthood. Atheists and people who were the only child in the family have shown the most negative attitude towards parenthood. The tendency of most of the participants was towards modern parenthood. However, compared to other participants: men, religious people and the ones with more siblings, have shown a more traditional attitude towards parenthood. All of the independent variables have shown bigger or smaller differences in attitudes, except for the level of studies, where there was no difference between students.
