The comedy group known as The Monty Python has made a great impact in the comedy world, but also in filmmaking. Namely, the group produced a popular 1970s show titled Monty Python's Flying Circus and five films. This thesis focuses on several of their films and aims to explain the usage of religious, political, social, and historical motifs in them, all of which serve as a comment on the society in a parodic way. The analysis has been based on three of their films: Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python's Life of Brian, and Monty Python's Meaning of Life. Even though the motifs in movies overlap, the focus in each is on a different matter. While The Holy Grail can be described as a parodical representation of the Arthurian legend, and Life of Brian as a satire of religious customs and acts, the object of ridicule exceeds the theme, mocking the meaninglessness of power, but also of established traditions, and therefore of conventions. On the other hand, Meaning of Life is produced as a series of differently themed sketches that ridicule previously mentioned topics, but also focus on philosophical questions of life, death, and existence. The movies in question are a proof of the Pythons' diverse knowledge in a number of topics and their ability to use it to provide a humorous outlook on the world.
