Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
One of the most interesting questions in sport psychology is how personality affects the success of athletes. Although there are conflicting opinions, experts can agree that personality is certainly one of the factors that contribute to this success. So far, studies have shown that athletes have higher results in extraversion and lower in neuroticism, while the results regarding the agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to experience are contradictory. Furthermore, motivation has a large role in the life of an athlete, especially the ability of individuals to motivate themselves. Research in this area also provided inconsistent results, though some of them show that people who play sports have greater self-motivation as compared to those who do not. The aim of this study was to examine and compare the personality traits and motivation in athlete and non-athlete students in elementary and secondary schools. The study included 125 athlete students and 102 non-athlete students. Data processing results showed that male athlete students scored higher in extraversion and agreeableness and lower in neuroticism than male non-athlete students, while in conscientiousness and openness there was no statistically significant differences between these groups. Female athlete students scored higher in extraversion than female non-athlete students but they did not differ in other personality dimensions. Also, the study did not show any statistically significant difference in self-motivation between athlete and non-athlete students.
