Abstract

One of the main characteristics of the Bologna process is the Erasmus program that promotes academic mobility. The principal objectives of the program are the creation of the work force that is informed of economic and social situation of other European country and the improvement of the quality and enhancement of student mobility. University of Zadar is also a part of this program and in the last few years, the academic mobility is in constant growth. To start with the theory of symbolic interactionism, the attention will be directed on several categories and those are the financial aspect, identity and culture and also on a dimension of study experience in foreign countries. The aim of this thesis is to find out the Erasmus experiences of the students. For the purpose of this research eight semi-structured interviews have been conducted. The sample were students from the department of humanities in University of Zadar. From the results of the research, it was concluded that this kind of experience left only positive results. The respondents adapted very quickly, but it can be concluded that is because the students were familiar with the language of the country and were in contact with other Erasmus students. The identity that usually strengthens in such situations is the personal identity because the individual is forced to rely on himself and his abilitie. The culture identity also strengthens but in lesser measures, while national identity is completely neglected. From everything that we mentioned, these respondents represent a typical profile of an Erasmus student with exception of getting into program only on the graduate level, while the previous researches showed that it was mostly about undergraduate students.
