Abstract

The objective of this research was to examine the effects of physical activities in relation to mental hardiness, stress resistance and overall life satisfaction of students. Since exercising has a beneficial effect on the mental health and quality of life, differences in stress resistance, mental hardiness and life satisfaction were expected with regard to: school class (sports or non-sports class), self-assessment of the respondents (whether they consider themselves athletes or not) and frequency of training. Another goal of the research was to examine the role of gender in collected data; it was expected that male students would have higher results than female students on all scales. The study included 134 high school students (58 boys and 76 girls) between the ages of sixteen and nineteen, the average age being 17 years old (M=17.46, SD=0.56). School class (sports or non-sports class) didn't prove a significant factor in determining life satisfaction, stress resistance or mental hardiness. The results showed that students who consider themselves athletes have higher life satisfaction and mental strength from those that don't consider themselves athletes, however there's no difference in stress resistance. Furthermore, frequency of exercise turned out the be an important factor for two (stress resistance and mental hardiness) out of three testing segments. Study found a statistically significant positive correlation between the frequency of physical activity and stress resistance, as well as the frequency of physical activity and mental hardiness. Results also showed that male students are more resistant to stress than female students, while no difference was found in the mental hardiness and life satisfaction in regards to gender. The study also examined interconnections between mental hardiness, stress resistance and life satisfaction which were positive and significant, as expected. Students who have greater overall life satisfaction are also more resistant to stress and have higher scores on scale of mental hardiness.
