Abstract

Results of previous studies showed that teaching is one of the most stressful occupations. High stress at workplace is generally correlated with bad physical health, but can also lead to deterioration of psychological health. Since teachers are exposed to stressful situations on a daily basis, there is a high possibility of developing symptoms of depression, anxiety and psychosomatic symptoms. By overviewing the literature, there is not much research dealing with the problem of differences in the level of mentioned symptoms considering some work place characteristics, nor contribution of some personality traits in explanation of developing before mentioned psychopathological symptoms. The main goal of this research was to explore the role of some workplace characteristics (educational level of teaching, school size and class teaching) and personal factors (sex and personality traits like positive and negative affect, resilience, conscientiousness and exhaustion) in explaining psychological health of teachers in Croatia. The research was conducted on primary school teachers who are teaching in lower grades, primary school teachers who are teaching in higher grades, and high school teachers from different cities in Croatia. There were altogether 2949 subjects (2459 female teachers and 490 male teachers) from 24 to 69 years of age (M=41,75). The results of one way ANOVAs showed that female teachers are experiencing higher levels of depression, anxiety and psychosomatic symptoms than male teachers, but there was no difference in mentioned symptoms considering educational level, school size and class teaching. Furthermore, the results of standard regression analysis showed that positive and negative affect, resilience and exhaustion are significant predictors of symptoms of depression, anxiety and psychosomatic symptoms in teachers.
