Abstract

The results of research in this area show the importantance of religiosity and awareness of our own mortality when definig meaning of life. Since there is no research that explains relationship between religiosity, attitudes toward death and meaning of life experience in the Croatia, the aim of this study was to examine the role of religiosity and attitudes towards death in explaining the meaning of life in adults and to verify age and gender specifics of these relationships. The study involved 433 participants (143 male and 290 female) from Croatia. Following measures were used: The meaning of life Scale, Religiosity Questionnaire and Death Attitude Profile Questionnaire. The results showed that there are differencies in religiosity, accepting of death, neutral accepting of death, fear od death and avoiding discussion about death in different age or stage of life. Regarding the differences between men and women, it was established that women are more afraid of death than men. Also, elderly women report a greater meaningful life experience than elderly men. Results of testing the relationship between meaning of life experience, religiosity and attitudes toward death and dying revealed the existence of significant correlations. By examining the relative contributions of individual group of variables explaining the meaning of life experience, it was found that age, fear of death, death acceptance and acceptance of death by fleeing make significant individual contributions in explaining the meaning of life experience. Individual characteristics and dimensions of religiosity and attitudes toward death and dying explain about 70% of variance in meaning of life experience.
