Abstract

This paper focuses on the digitization of music materials. Emphasis is placed on the formats that are most used nowadays, primarily the MP3 format. The theoretical part deals with the emergence and development of the MP3 format, and the principles of digitization of analog records. Today, the digital music format, like MP3, has many advantages compared to the analog format. One important advantage in the context of the libraries is ID3 tag, a metadata repository that every such record contains and which significantly speeds up work with the data. On the other hand, the music profession often offends the bad quality of the MP3 format. The research part of the work deals with this issue. 12 respondents; 6 musicians and 6 average listeners were asked to determine whether they hear the difference between the analog and digital recordings of the same composition. It turned out that analog tapes are more enjoyable than digital, and that, when asked about the distinction between digital and analog sound track, musicians mostly showed a greater capacity for such distinction. More specifically, 5 out of 6 musicians successfully recognized version of the analog and digital while only 2 non-musicians managed to identify the same. As expected, musicians were more precise than non-musicians it the test.
