Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
This paper will show the importance of reading promotion among children and adolescents and the importance of adopting reading skills from an early age. Special attention is dedicated to reading in the Czech Republic and presenting the most significant and the most visited programs which promote reading in this country. As reading is not an innate skill, it is necessary to learn and adopt reading skills at early age. Research confirm a direct correlation between adopting reading skills and habits, and later success in school and in employment. Reading habits are built and shaped by various factors, from educational to the overall environment. The most significant factors, also presented in this paper, are primarily family, libraries, schools and the media. Family, and especially parents have a crucial role in teaching children how to read, in motivating for reading and creating the habit of reading. Today in the 21st century, children and adolescents are showing less interest in reading. Due to the impact of modern technology children from an early age are exposed to computers, the Internet, mobile phones, and the content of the new media, which is increasingly attracting their attention. School and public libraries around the world are organizing various programs to encourage reading among children and adolescents. Some programs include the participation of the family in which the parents learn about the importance of reading from an early age, the appropriate selection of a book etc. The final part of the work will present the most significant and the most visited programs that promote reading in the Czech Republic number of which has increased significantly from the end of the 20th century.
