Abstract
Foreign languages are becoming more and more popular in the Croatian education. The greatest problem is that learners of different languages are at different levels of competencies, communicative or cognitive. The main purpose of this paper is to compare the German and the English language in the Croatian educational context in order to get an overview of how second language acquisition develops in students’ minds and how different languages are comprehended differently. This paper is divided into 3 chapters explaining second language acquisition and its process. The first chapter focuses on the theory of second language acquisition and is followed by the chapter “Educational context and school system in Croatia” that deals with the key factors important for learning a language, such as motivation, age, anxiety, negative or positive attitudes and class materials. The last chapter presents the methodology of the research and results of the questionnaire that show that there is a difference in understanding English and German language in both writing and speaking.

Strani jezici postaju sve popularniji u hrvatskom obrazovanju. Najveći problem pri tome je što učenici koji uče različite jezike dostižu različite komunikacijske i kognitivne razine iz jezika. Cilj ovog rada je usporediti njemački i engleski jezik u hrvatskom obrazovnom kontekstu kako bi dobili uvid u proces razvoja drugog jezika te kako različite osobe shvaćaju i razumiju različite jezike. Rad je podijeljen na tri poglavlja koja objašnjavaju proces usvajanja drugog stranog jezika. Prvo poglavlje iznosi teoriju usvajanja drugog jezika nakon kojeg slijedi poglavlje “Obrazovni kontekst i školski sustav u Hrvatskoj” koji se bavi ključnim faktorima za učenje kao npr. motivacija, dob, anksioznost, pozitivni i negativni statovi i nastavni materijali. Posljednje poglavlje prikazuje metodologiju istraživanja i rezultate provedenog upitnika. Rezultati pokazuju da postoji razlika u učenju i shvaćanju engleskog i njemačkog jezika u pisanju i govorenju.
