Abstract

Velebit is Croatia′s mountain, a symbol of national identity that belongs to the mountainous Dinaric Alps chain. Velebit is the largest protected area in the Republic of Croatia, and on its territory are two national parks, Paklenica and North Velebit. When Croatia joins the EU in Velebit has become part of the EU′S Natura 2000 ecological network which clearly reflected a broader global significance of mountain. For the most part extends along the sea and provides at a height of 700 m to the lowest pass well to to the highest peak of the 1757 m. Of great importance as the Centre and the most important biodiversity Velebit endemic flora and fauna of the land area in the Republic of Croatia. In the Republic of Croatia according to the Register of protected areas of the Ministry of environment and nature protection most of the protected area is in the category of nature parks, and the biggest contribution it gives exactly the Velebit. Paklenica national park is due to its natural characteristics, geomorphological forms and preserved forests among the first declared a national park. In the northern part of the Velebit mountain range in 1999. has been declared a national park North Velebit that stands out biodiversity and primeval wilderness. Northern Velebit national park with its characteristics in the future can be the backbone of sustainable development of the local community that is based on the tradition, but also as a space that offers the new perfect. With two national parks in the remaining part of the Velebit mountain is protected within the category of the nature park with an area of 200000 ha. All of the above points to an extremely important contribution to the protection of nature of the Velebit mountain. Nature conservation should contribute to the survival and sustainable development of mountain regions and the local population of the area and it′s already become a hot question in front of him sets the a kind of challenge.
