Abstract (croatian) Ovaj završni rad proučava određene aspekte u drami Biedermann und die Brandstifter.
Abstract (english) This Bachelor thesis studies certain aspects in the play Biedermann und die Brandstifter. Ein Lehrstück ohne Lehre (1958) written by the famous Swiss author Max Frisch, who owes his popularity to this certain work, but also to his famous novels Stiller (1954), Homo faber (1957) and Mein Name sei Gantenbein (1964). A special accent is put on the elements of absurd and grotesque. The purpose of this thesis is to emphasize these kind of elements and explain them through the context of the work.
This Bachelor thesis consists of six chapters and starts with an introduction in which the topic and the main goals are explained. This is followed by the author's short biography and the theoretical part which examines the beginnings and characteristics of the burlesque. This is followed by a plot summary which serves as a foundation for a better understanding of Frisch’s play. To this also contributes the analysis of the main and supporting characters and the analysis of motifs and symbols. It should be mentioned that Frisch met Bertolt Brecht and befriended him, which had a strong impact on his future work. The play which is being discussed here was inspired by Brecht’s epic theatre, but the main inspiration came from the happenings in Czechoslovakia.
Frisch’s play contains a lot of grotesque and absurd situations which are the main topics of this Bachelor thesis and are connected to the main character named Gottlieb Biedermann. His problems become obvious when a couple of arsonists enter his house and try to burn it down, but the main character closes his eyes to reality and does not accept the truth that could save his life.
This thesis confirms that this play also contains Frisch’s critique of the society that followed Hitler and supported the regime because it didn’t believe in good changes. This thesis ends with a chapter that emphasizes the main characteristics and conclusions of the analysis.
