Abstract
This thesis is concerned with existentialist elements in Samuel Beckett’s play Waiting for Godot, more accurately, it examines the influence of the existentialist philosophy of Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Martin Heidegger on Samuel Beckett and his play Waiting for Godot. Furthermore, along with the socio-historical context of the 20th century, and a short presentation of the existentialist philosophy, the main emphasis of the thesis has been placed primarily on the play itself and its relation to certain philosophical concepts like freedom, anxiety, isolation and absurd, as well as on Beckett’s use of humour in this context. The goal of this thesis is to attempt to show that, despite Samuel Beckett’s claims that some philosophy influenced his work, the presence of certain concepts of the existentialist philosophy in his artistic expression cannot be denied.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj završni rad bavi se egzistencijalističkim elementima u djelu Samuela Becketta U očekivanju Godota, točnije, bavi se prezentiranjem utjecaja egzistencijalističke filozofije Alberta Camusa, Jean-Paul Sartrea i Martina Heideggera na samog autora kroz njegovo djelo U očekivanju Godota. Uz prikaz socio-povijesnoga konteksta 20. st. i kratki prikaz same egzistencijalističke filozofije naglasak je primarno stavljen na samo djelo i njegov odnos prema određenim filozofskim konceptima poput slobode, anksioznosti, izoliranosti i absurda, kao i na Beckettovu upotrebu humora u ovom kontekstu. Cilj rada je pokušaj da se prikaže kako, unatoč tvrdnjamaSamuela Becketta kako filozofija nije utjecala na njegov rad,ne može se poreći prisutnost određenih koncepata egzistencijalističke filozofije u njegovom umjetničkom izražaju.
