Abstract
This paper focuses on images of the private and the public in Pula Meehan’s poetry. It attempts to show how these images intertwine to create the lyric ‘I’ and the relationship between female experience and public spheres of life. The paper demonstrates how body imagery and personal relationships together with dreams and cultural traditions play a major role in the quest for the poetic persona’s true self. Furthermore, it conveys the importance of subverting the traditional image of women in Irish society that, for long, has been male dominated and influenced by the Catholic Church. The analyzed poems reflect Paula Meehan’s empathy and social awareness, addressing issues important not only to the portrayal of Irish womanhood but to Irish society in general.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj rad bavi se prikazima privatnog i javnog u pjesništvu Paule Meehan. Namjera je istražiti kako se ti prikazi isprepliću u stvaranju lirskog subjekta i odnosa između ženskog iskustva i javnih sfera života. Prikazi tijela i osobni odnosi, uz snove i kulturno naslijeđe, pokazat će se ključnima u potrazi za vlastitim identitetom. Nadalje, u radu se ističe važnost preoblikovanja tradicionalnog poimanja žena u irskom društvu, koje je dugo bilo pod utjecajem muškaraca i katoličke crkve. Obrađene pjesme odražavaju suosjećanje i društvenu svijest Paule Mehhan, koja na taj način progovara o pitanjima važnim ne samo za prikaz žena u Irskoj već i za irsko društvo općenito.
