Abstract
Teaching methods are very important in second language acquisition. The aim of this thesis is to give theoretical background of the teaching methods and approaches, and present the changes that occurred in the teaching process. Some methods were used in the past, and some methods have been more used in the last ten years. The Grammar Translation Method, one of the most traditional method was used in the past. This method’s focus was on grammar and translation. The dominant approach later shifted to Communicative Language Teaching which is based on speaking and fluency. Through interviews with teachers and a questionnaire conducted with students the research in this thesis wants to consider the changes that have occurred is the classroom. Learning English language is a long process, so methods should be combined and teaching adjusted to the students, since there is not one single method that suits all of them.

Metode podučavanja imaju važnu ulogu u procesu usvajanja stranog jezika. Cilj ovog diplomskog rada je prikazati teorijsku pozadinu metoda podučavanja, te prikazati promjene koje su se dogodile u procesu podučavanja. Neke metode su se više koristile u prošlosti, a neke se više koriste danas. Jedna od najstarijih metoda koja se koristila u prošlosti je Grammar Translation Method gdje je fokus na gramatičkim pravilima i prijevodu. Glavna metoda je zamijenjena pristupom koji se temelji na ra razgovoru i tečnosti. Cilj ovog istraživanja je pomoću intervjua s profesorima i anketi provedenoj među učenicima potvrditi da se promjena dogodila, ali također potvrditi da je učenje engleskog jezika proces, tako da u podučavanju trebamo kombinirati metode i naći način kako podučavanje prilagoditi učenicima jer ne postoji jedna metoda koja svima odgovara.
