Abstract
This paper examines the representations of contemporary Irish diaspora and life of Irish women emigrants in Emer Martin‟s novels More Bread or I‟ll Appear (2000) and Breakfast in Babylon (1995). This paper sets out to analyze how the protagonists oppose the traditional image of Irish society. Emer Martin intertwines different characters such as the homeless, transvestites, drug dealers and even a gay priest who all challenge the ideals of the society creating their own rules and norms. The paper is divided in two sections. The first section deals with the (more general) traditional image of Irish society as well as the portrayal of Irish diaspora, while the second section analyses Catholicism, family, sexuality and relationships in more detail. The aim of the paper is to express how contemporary Irish emigrants and especially women emigrants in Martin‟s novels subvert social norms that ruled Irish society for a long time.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj rad analizira prikaze suvremene irske dijaspore i život irskih emigrantica u romanima More Bread or I‟ll Appear (2000.) i Breakfast in Babylon (1995.) spisateljice Emer Martin. U ovom radu se istražuju načini na koje se protagonisti romana protive tradicinalnoj slici irskog društva. Emer Martin isprepliće različite likove poput beskućnika, transvestita, dilera droge ili pak svećenika homoseksualca koji rekonsturiraju ideale društva stvarajući vlastita pravila i norme. Rad je podijeljen je u dva dijela. Prvi dio prikazuje (općenitiju) tradicionalnu sliku irskog društva kao i opise irske dijaspore, dok drugi dio rada pomnije analizira katoličku vjeru, obitelj, seksualnost, međuljudske odnose. Cilj je rada je prikazati kako se suvremeni irski emigrant i posebice emigrantice iz Martininih romana u potpunosti suprostavljaju društvenim normama koje su godinama ograničavale i sputavale irsko društvo.
