Abstract

This paper analyzes majpan, willow tree that lifted in Dalj. The practice of lifting majpan was researched through various of methods and techniques such as the method of participant observation, semi-structured interview and analyzing of existing literature. The purpose of this paper is to explore the meaning of the practice of lifting majpan for local inhabitants. For Croatians, majpan is more than a “simple tree”. It is one of the markers of their identity and proof that they have tradition which they want to keep till today. That is expressed through representation of national symbols such as the Croatian flag, anthem and patriotic songs that they perform on that event. It is unknown how and when majpan has come in Dalj, but that is so not important to the local population. They lift majpan every year. The exception was during the Homeland war when the population was confronted with enforced departure from Dalj, so the practice in that period of time held in Nemetin. When displaced population returned to Dalj, majpan continues to lifting on the point where was lifted before the war when it became a real rural attraction. In this paper was described the work of the Croatian Association "Majpan" whose members are most responsible for the maintenance of this local "tradition". Their commitment leads to popularisation of this practice and raises whole event to a higher level. Although the practice has been changhed changed through the time, it has stayed event for locals. For raising this event on higher level it is necessary more organization and working on the promotion.
