Abstract (english) One of the most famous epicists in the middle ages was Wolfram von Eschenbach. He is famous for his knightly novel work Parzivâl. This novel explains the life of two characters, Parzivâl and Gâwân. Even though both characters are knights, their life and the road to knighthood differs a lot. Parzivâl, after whom this novel is named, grew up in isolation, in a forest, which means he grew up more modestly. One can say that Gâwâns road to knighthood and heroism was easier than Parzivâls, because he grew up on the courtyard. Since childhood he was able to watch knights and learn how to be one of them. These two characters differ from each other because Parzivâl is focused on knighthood and Gâwân deals with multiple challenges at the same time. The similarity between them is that they are both ready to lend a helping hand. Parzivâl is ready to lend a helping hand but only when it comes to physical strength and fighting. On the other hand, Gâwân is more often willing to help but in different ways. What they have in common is that both strive for adventure. In these different situations, they have the opportunity to show that they are heroes. However, their willingness to help is not the only characteristic which makes them heroes. Honor, generosity, courage and trust are some of those characteristics. One can say that a hero is someone who tries to overcome their limits and always be there for others despite his own problems.
