i modificirana verzija Tactics of manipulation; Buss, 1992; Opat, 2017).
Abstract (english) Emotional intelligence refers to the ability of assessing one’s emotions and emotions of others, expressing and regulating emotions as well as using this information for the purpose of adjusting future behaviour. Also, high emotional intelligence helps to understand the consequences of manipulative behaviour. Manipulation, as a part of man’s everyday life regards one’s intentional, although not necessarily conscious, employment of various tactics in order to attain a particular goal; it can be about manipulating inanimate objects or interpersonal relationships, so as to maintain a relationship or keep a partner. The use of manipulative tactics occurs far more often in romantic relationships in comparison to any other types of relationships, which indicates the specific nature and intensity of a romantic relationship. Since emotional intelligence and manipulation have significant roles in romantic relationships, the aim of this research was to establish the correlation of these two constructs and examine whether men and women differ in emotional intelligence and the use of particular tactics of manipulation. The final sample involved 73 women and 38 men with an average age of 27,48 years. The participants completed Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ-45; Takšić, 2002) as well as Modified Tactics of Manipulation Scale (translated and modified version of Tactics of Manipulation; Buss, 1992; Opat, 2017). The results showed a significant difference in emotional intelligence and the use of manipulation tactics when it comes to sex. Women achieve higher scores than men on the emotional competence questionnaire. Women also report far greater usage of indirect tactics for coercion and direct tactics of manipulation. There was no difference in sex regarding the use of indirect humouring tactics. Lastly, a significant correlation was established between particular subscales of emotional intelligence and manipulation tactics. The ability to perceive and understand emotions is associated with the use of direct tactics, while the ability to express and name emotions is associated with the use of indirect tactics for humouring.
