Abstract
This paper deals with Virginia Woolf as a feminist and explores her contribution to feminism and gender studies. The focus of the paper is the concept of androgyny as an ideal that could reconcile sex-differences and transcend the boundaries of socially constructed sex and gender. Woolf’s androgyny and its importance for feminism are explained in regards to her works: A Room of One’s Own, Orlando and Three Guineas. Woolf’s androgyny was primarily created for female writers as a mechanism of escape from unfavourable circumstances of a male-dominated society. Furthermore, her ideas on androgyny are aimed at more extensive social changes, which would deconstruct the patriarchal system in its totality. Thereby, Woolf’s feminist approach to androgyny can be seen as contribution to the creation of a society untroubled by racial, social and gender inequalities.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj rad bavi se Virginiom Woolf kao feministicom i istražuje njezin doprinos feminizmu i rodnim studijima. U fokusu rada je koncept ‘androginije’ kao ideal koji može pomiriti spolne razlike i nadići granice društveno konstruiranih ideja o rodu i spolu. Woolfičina ideja androginije i njezina važnost za feminizam objašnjene su u odnosu na “Svoju Vlastitu Sobu”, “Orlando” i “Tri Gvineje”. Woolfičin pojam androginije je prvenstveno namijenjen ženskim piscima kao mehanizam koji im omogućuje izlaz iz nepovoljnih društvenih okolnosti u sustavu muške dominacije. Nadalje, njezina konceptualizacija androginije teži opsežnijoj društvenoj promjeni i potpunoj rekonstrukciji društvenog sistema. Time Woolfičin feministički pristup androginiji djeluje izvan okvira izričito feminističkih uvjerenja i teži stvaranju društva bez rasnih, socijalnih i rodnih nejednakosti.
