Abstract
This final paper examines modes of literary presentation of family life and family interrelationships in the context of concrete social realities. With this in mind three novels from the history of English literature are taken into consideration as the subject of our analysis: L. Sterne’s Tristram Shandy (1759), V. Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (1927) and McKenna’s The Magdalen (1999). Special attention is being given to the question of aspects of presentation of woman’s position in family in the... More selected novels with analysis being focused on logical expectation that changes must have taken place over a time span of almost 250 years. Our analysis of the selected novels reveals however that aspects of subordination of woman in the 20th century family are identical with those from the 18th century. Thus almost the same aspects of subordination can be recognized in presentations of female characters like Mrs. Shandy, Mrs. Ramsay, or Esther and Majella Doyle, e.g. anonymity, exclusion from public life and decision making sphere, as well as insistence on procreativity as opposed to (male) creativity. Ovaj završni rad propituje načine na koje roman prikazuje obiteljski život i obiteljske odnose u kontekstu konkretne društvene zbilje. U tom smislu kao predmet analize odabrana su tri romana iz povijesti engleske književnosti: Tristram Shandy (L.Sterne, 1759), To the Lighthouse (V.Woolf, 1927) i The Magdalen (M.Conlon-McKenna, 1999). Analiza se posebno usredotočuje na pitanje načina prikazivanja položaja žene u obitelji u odabranim romanima te je usmjerena na logičnu pretpostavku da su se u... More vremenskom rasponu od gotovo 250 godina morale dogoditi promjene. Provedena analiza odabranih romana razotkriva međutim da su oblici potčinjenosti žene u obitelji i društvu u 20. st. jednaki onima iz 18. st. Tako se u prikazima likova kao što su gđa Shandy, gđa Ramsay, Esther i Majella Doyle mogu prepoznati gotovo isti oblici potčinjavanja kao što su npr. anonimnost, odsustvo iz javnog života i sfere odlučivanja te isticanje prokreativnosti nasuprot (muškoj) kreativnosti.
