Abstract
This MA thesis deals with metaphors, i.e. with conceptual love metaphors. There are two approaches to metaphor: the traditional one where metaphor is considered a poetic device and the cognitive one, which was studied here. Metaphor is present in thought and action. Conceptual metaphor consists of two parts; domains – source and target domain. The source domain is a more concrete concept, which is used to describe the target domain. The target domain is either an abstract or not clearly picturable concept that is drawn from the source domain. There are three different types of conceptual metaphors: structural, orientational and ontological. The focus of this MA thesis was the structural conceptual metaphor, since love metaphors are mainly of this kind. In order to explain love in terms of something more concrete, lyrics of 28 pop songs were analyzed in order to find various types of conceptual love metaphors, such as LOVE IS A JOURNEY, LOVE IS A PATIENT, LOVE IS MADNESS, LOVE IS FIRE, LOVE IS WAR, etc. The conclusion was that love metaphors are omnipresent in everyday life, as well as in music. Love is a theme of most songs. Therefore, we will always speak about love in terms of something more familiar to us in order to express it.

Ovaj diplomski rad bavi se metaforama, odnosno konceptualnim ljubavnim metaforama. Postoje dva pristupa metafori: tradicionalni, u kojem je metafora pjesnički uređaj, i kognitivni koji se ovdje proučava. Metafora je prisutna u misli i djelovanju. Konceptualna metafora sastoji se od dva dijela; domene – izvorne i ciljne. Izvorna domena je konkretniji koncept koji se koristi kako bi se opisala ciljna domena. Ciljna domena je apstraktan koncept koji nastaje iz izvorne domene. Postoje tri različite vrste konceptualne metafore: strukturna, orijentacijska i ontološka. Fokus ovog diplomskog rada je strukturna konceptualna metafora, budući da su metafore ljubavi većinom takve vrste. Kako bi se ljubav objasnila nečim konkretnijim, analiziran je tekst 28 pop pjesama u potrazi za nekoliko vrsta konceptualnih metafora ljubavi, kao što su LJUBAV JE PUTOVANJE, LJUBAV JE PACIJENT, LJUBAV JE LUDILO, LJUBAV JE VATRA, LJUBAV JE RAT, itd. Slijedi zaključak da su metafore ljubavi sveprisutne u svakodnevnom životu, kao i u glazbi. Ljubav je tema većine pjesama. Dakle, o ljubavi ćemo uvijek govoriti koristeći nešto nama više poznato kako bismo je izrazili.
