Abstract
The aim of this paper is to attempt to demonstrate how contemporary Irish writer Edna O'Brien represents the decline of the Irish Catholic family in her Country Girls Trilogy (The Country Girls (1960), The Lonely Girl (1962), and Girls In Their Married Bliss (1964)). The introductory chapter will focus on facts which show what life in Ireland was like and how the system carefully kept everyone in their place. The following chapters will focus on the Irish family and Catholicism, detailing the lives of the heroines of the Trilogy. Their lives will be shown, from their humble beginnings in the country, to the bitter end in the city. The main two areas of interest will be love, family and religion. The crisis in each leads to the decline and failure of any attempt of happy family life, which is, as already emphasized, the main point of this paper.
Abstract (croatian)
Cilj ovog završnog rada je prikazati kako suvremena irska spisateljica, Edna O'Brien prikazuje raspad irske katoličke obitelji u trilogiji Country Girls (The Country Girls (1960), The Lonely Girl (1962), and Girls In Their Married Bliss (1964)). Uvodno poglavlje fokusirat će se na stvarnu situaciju, činjenice koje pokazuju što je to bio život u Irskoj i kako je sistem pažljivo sve držao sve na mjestu. Poglavlja koja slijede usredotočit će se na Irsku obitelj i katoličanstvo, opisujući u detalje živote junakinja trilogije. Njihovi životi bit će prikazani, od skromnih početaka na selu, do ogorčenog kraja u gradu. Dva glavna područja interesa bit će ljubav/obitelj i religija. Kriza u svakom od njih vodi do raspada i propadanja svakog pokušaja sretnog obiteljskog života, što je, kao što je već naglašeno, glavna točka ovog rada. Do zaključka, čitatelj će, nadam se, znati nešto više o situaciji u Irskoj, i razumjet će važnost fikcije Edne O'Brien.
