Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease followed by high blood sugar caused by inadequatly excreted and/or inadequate action of insulin. Lately, there has been a great increase of people suffering from diabetes and a further increase is forseen. Due to the nature of the disease which requires everyday care and commitment the aim of this study was to examine the relationship of life satisfaction and health locus of control in diabetes mellitus patients. The study was conducted on 129 patients suffering from type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The following measuring instruments were used: Life satisfaction scale and Questionnaire for testing of percieved sources of health control (ZLK – 90). The results have shown that people with diabetes who are more satisfied with their lives tend to believe that the course of disease is under their control and not affected by external, uncontrollable factors. On the other hand, people less satisfied with their lives believe that the course of disease is determinated by chance or external factors. Also, people with diabetes who are less satisfied with their health attribute the causes of the disease to external, uncontrollable factors. Women tend to believe more that the course of disease is influenced by external and uncontrollable factors. Men and women and also people with different engagement in therapy, are equally satisfied with their life.
