Abstract (english) The main objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the linguistic-literary domain of creativity, reproductive ability (ability to retrieve the meaning of known words), motivational orientation in the academic domain and Croatian language skills among the elementary school students who participated and those who did not participate in LiDraNo 2019 contest. Those components were selected on the basis of Renzulli's three-ring theory of giftedness that consists of three components: creativity, high abilities, and strong motivation.
Appearances of fresh theories and increasing number of researches in that field suggest that creativity is very complex and specific phenomena, and is best to be explored within a certain domain. Children that excel in creativity have a tendency to express themselves within specific areas (Lubart, Zenasi and Barbot, 2013; Runco, 1987). Furthermore, the Mill Hill Vocabulary scale was developed in an attempt to assess reproductive ability, one of two components of the general intelligence identified by Spearman (1923, Raven 1983). Gifted and successful students are engaged in creative activities due to intrinsic motivational regulation (Ryan and Connell, 1989).
Thirty-eight students (28 girls and 10 boys) attending sixth, seventh and eighth grades in elementary schools in the city of Zadar were participants of this study. One half of the sample (N = 19) were LiDraNo participants, while the other half were those who did not participate that contest. EPoC (instrument for assessing potential creativity of children and adolescents), the Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale, and SRQ-A (questionnaire that examines the reasons why children perform certain school assignments) instruments were used for testing selected variables.
LiDraNo participants have achieved better results in certain components of the language-literary domain of creativity. They have also achieved higher results in the reproductive ability test and had higher autonomous motivational regulation in the academic domain than the non-participants. Furthermore, texts written by students who achieved better results on the reproductive ability test were broader in extent and their stories were more creative. Participants of several LiDraNo contests achieved higher scores in Croatian language than the non-participants.
