Abstract Diese Masterarbeit analysiert die Ambivalenz in der Literatur.
Abstract (croatian) Ovaj diplomski rad analizira pojam ambivalencije u književnosti. Savonarola, Faust i albigenzi razvijaju vrlo važne odnose s okolinom i društvom.
Abstract (english) This master's thesis analyzes the notion of ambivalence in literature. Ambivalence is analyzed and interpreted on the basis of three literary works Savonarola, Die Albigenser and Faust, written by Nicolas Lenau, a well-known author, in the 19th century. In this thesis, ambivalence is identified, analyzed and interpreted by means of two definitions. The first definition is taken over from Meyers’ Literatur-Lexikon, while the second one from Mikhail Bakhtin, one of the most notable literary critics. Primarily, certain heroes will be analyzed through the first, simpler, definition of ambivalence, according to which, the heroes are in conflict with their environment. Their ambivalence rests on freedom, which everyone wants to attain, although they only manage to reach death. Savonarola, Faust, and the Albigenses develop important relationships with their environment and society. In Savonarola’s and the Albigenses’ case, the Church acts as an apparent opponent of both sides. In Faust, the devil undertakes the role of the Church. After the analysis, both the Church and the devil may be equated, as their actions have the same results on their main characters. Besides the Church and the devil, there are two more entities that have an impact on the plot – nature, and God – nature plays a role of a plot’s instigator, whereas God, although juxtaposed with his opponent (for instance, in Faust), in none of the three literary works does he take action in order to help the heroes avoid death. Bakhtin’s ambivalence becomes apparent in the realization that the Church, nature, God, and even the devil, should be liberating, instead of just bringing death. The question, which ultimately arises, is whether it is worth fighting for freedom since every struggle results in death. Religion, which should be uniting them all, only promises hope.
