Abstract
The position of English in the globalized world has shaped the way it is taught and used in schools as a second or foreign language. As more and more people are using English as a second language, the question of native-speaker norms has become an issue among scholars and teachers. The aim of this thesis was to explore the attitudes of learners from two schools where English is taught as a foreign language. The method of research consisted of a questionnaire and interviews. It was administered among Croatian high school learners at a technical school in Zadar and French high school learners at a technical school in Lyon. The questionnaire results showed moderately high attitude towards native speaker pronunciation norms. The differences between Croatian and French students were noticed in regard to the importance of ELF in L2 communication, pronunciation learning and teaching issues and concerning grammar mistakes. Croatian students were accepting more ELF pronunciation, while results for French students were moderate in this regard. Regarding pronunciation teaching and learning, French students had moderately high results meaning that they supported teaching native pronunciation from an early age, while results for Croatian students were only moderate. Finally, the third difference regarding grammar mistakes refers to moderately high results of Croatian students who believed grammar mistakes did not create obstacles in stable communication, while results for French students were only moderate. The results of interviews showed that Croatian students chose ‘international’ variety believing that they did not have noticeable Croatian accent that created issues, while French students chose native speaker variety and admitted of having an accent which posed obstacles in communication. This study showed that trends are changing and that the discussion of native speaker norm is still on-going.

Pozicija engleskog jezika u današnjem globaliziranom svijetu oblikovala je način na koji se uči i koristi u školama kao drugi ili strain jezik. Zbog njegove raširenosti po cijelom svijetu, nastavnici i znanstvenici su pokrenuli brojne rasprave o tome kako je današnji status engleskog jezika utjecao na normu koja se podučava u školi. Cilj ovoga rada je da prikaže stav učenika dvaju škola u kojima se engleski podučava kao strani jezik. Metoda istraživanja uključuje upitnik s Likertovom skalom od 5 ponuđena odgovora te intervju. Upitnik i intervju provedeni su u tehničkoj školi u Hrvatskoj, u Zadru te u tehničkoj školi u Francuskoj, La Mache, u Lyonu. Rezultati upitnika pokazali su pozitivan odnos učenika prema izgovoru izvornog govornika. Zamijećene su razlike između dvije grupe ispitanika u odnosu na važnost korištenja engleskog jezika kao lingua franca u razgovoru s neizvornim govornicima, u odnosu na problem podučavanja i učenja izgovora te po pitanju gramatičkih grešaka. Hrvatski učenici su više prihvatili lingua franca izgovor, dok su rezultati francuskih učenika u tom pogledu bili umjereni. Što se tiče podučavanja i učenja izgovora, rezultati francuskih učenika su bili umjereno visoki što znači da podržavaju podučavanje izgovora izvornih govornika od rane dobi. Rezultati su hrvatskih učenika bili samo umjereni u tom pogledu. Posljednja, treća uočena razlika odnosi se na gramatičke greške gdje su hrvatski učenici imali umjereno visoke rezultate, a francuski samo umjerene. Taj podatak govori da hrvatski učenici manje gramatičke greške ne smatraju preprekom tečnoj komunikaciji. Rezultati intervjua pokazali su da su se hrvatski učenici odlučili za međunarodnu varijantu engleskog jezika te su negirali postojanje primjetnog hrvatskog naglaska, dok su francuski učenici odabrali varijantu izvornih govornika i potvrdili postojanje francuskog naglaska kao prepreke uspješnoj komunikaciji. Ovo je istraživanje pokazalo promjenu trenda te da je rasprava o normama izvornih govornika i dalje aktualna.
