Abstract
This diploma paper sets out to explore The Country Girls Trilogy by Edna O'Brien and Emer Martin’s two novels More Bread or I'll Appear and Breakfast in Babylon. The paper analyses subversiveness and shamelessness of female characters and ways in which they question and defy numerous aspects of Irish tradition. The analysis demonstrates that female protagonists, both in the early sixties and at the end of the 20th century, try to break free from restrictive and rigid Irish laws that defined female identity, and that Irish heroines 'don’t have to be good anymore.' The paper shows how Edna O’Brien’s early novels managed to give voice to subjected Irish women and thus set the path for Emer Martin’s defiant and astringent female protagonists.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj diplomski rad se bavio proučavanjem djela Edne O’Brien The Country Girls Trilogy and Epilogue (1986) te romanima More Bread or I'll Appear (2001) i Breakfast in Babylon (1997) autorice Emer Martin. Ovim se radom istražila subverzivnost i besramnost ženskih likova i načine na koje dovode u pitanje i prkose brojnim aspektima irske tradicije. Analizom u radu je utvrđeno da ženske protagonistice, kako početkom šezdesetih, tako i krajem 20.stoljeća nastoje se pokušavaju osloboditi restriktivnih i krutih irskih zakona koji su definiraliženski identitet i da 'irske heroine više ne moraju biti dobre. ' U ovom radu je prikazano kako su rane romani Edne O'Brien uspjeli dati glas podložnim irskim ženama i tako postaviti put za prkosne i oporbene protagonistice Emer Martin.
