Abstract
What this diploma thesis aims to analyse are four different novels written by contemporary Irish writers: Star of the Sea (2003) by Joseph O'Connor, The Secret Scripture (2008) by Sebastian Barry, Brooklyn (2009) by Colm Toibin, and The Butcher Boy (1992) by Patrick McCabe. The focus is placed on different issues that are related to Irish history and its society in general, with themes ranging from politics and national and religious identity to gender roles, with a special emphasis placed on the role and identity of Irish women in their society. What is more, the influence of Catholic religion on Irish society as the most dominant one throughout the history is being examined as well, together with the conflicts between Protestants and Catholics, as experienced from the novels. Female protagonists of these novels are separately discussed, as well in the context of how social and political changes affected them throughout the 19th and 20th century.

Cilj ovog diplomskog rada je analiza četvero različitih romana suvremenih irskih pisaca, odnosno Star of the Sea Josepha O'Connora iz 2003., The Secret Scripture Sebastiana Barrya, iz 2008., Brooklyn Colma Toibina iz 2009. i Patrickov McCabeov The Butcher Boy iz 1992. Rad se fokusira na različitim pitanjima koje se vežu uz irsku povijest i irsko društvo, a teme variraju od politike, nacionalnog i religijskog identiteta pa sve do rodnih uloga, s posebnim naglaskom na ulogu i identitet Irkinja u vlastitom društvu. Također, proučava se i utjecaj katoličanstva kao vjere koja je najdominantnija u irskom društvu kroz cijelu njihovu povijest, zajedno sa sukobima između protestanata i katolika opisanim u romanima. Ženski protagonisti navedenih romana se također zasebno razmatraju u kontekstu utjecaja socijalnih i političkih promjena kroz 19. i 20. stoljeće.
