Abstract Jezik i kultura su usko povezani te učenje jednog podrazumijeva učenje drugog (Brown, 2007). To je posebno vidljivo u učionicama stranih jezika, u kojima nastavnici, osim pukog poznavanja riječi i gramatičkih pravila, nastoje prenijeti i pripadajuća kultura. Stereotipi se često smatraju preprekom u ovom procesu (Nikitina, 2017) jer utječu na proces i konačne ishode učenja (Schulz, 2007, prema Drewelow, 2013). Za stereotipe, koji se obično definiraju kao uvjerenja koja jedna grupa ima o drugoj, očekuje se da se mijenjaju kroz kontakt sa članovima stereotipizirane grupe (Biernet i Crandall, 1994) ili kroz primanje informacija koje ne potvrđuju stereotip (Rothbart, 1981). McCauley i Stitt (1978) su usvojili probabilistički pristup stereotipima te počeli koristiti dijagnostički omjer (DR) kao mjeru stereotipa: DR koji je različit od jedan ukazuje na stereotipiziranje. Glavni cilj ovog istraživanja bio je utvrditi tendencije stereotipiziranja koje pokazuju studenti engleskog i francuskog jezika i književnosti na Sveučilištu u Zadru. Kao mjera stereotipiziranja, korištena je prethodno spomenuta tehnika dijagnostičkog omjera. Sudionici su trebali procijeniti zastupljenost osobina u vlastitoj etničkoj skupini, etničkoj skupini čiji jezik studiraju te još jednoj etničkoj skupini. Procjenjivane osobine odabrane su na temelju predistraživanja u kojem su sudjelovali studenti psihologije te studenti kulture i turizma sveučilišta u Zadru. Studenti su pokazali tendencije stereotipiziranja prema svim procjenjivanim skupinama u glavnom istraživanju. Sve osobine koje su na temelju predistraživanja odabrane kao tipične za Hrvate su procijenjene najzastupljenijima kod Hrvata. Osobina „hladni“ je percipirana najzastupljenijom kod Engleza, a osobina „romantični“ najzastupljenijom kod Francuza. Studenti engleskog i francuskog jezika uglavnom se nisu razlikovali u percepciji zastupljenosti osobina. Studenti nižih godina francuskog jezika percipirali su umjetničku nastrojenost zastupljenijom kod Francuza od studenata viših godina francuskog jezika. Dobivene razlike u sklonosti stereotipiziranju s obzirom na boravak u inozemnim zemljama uglavnom nisu bile u skladu s očekivanjima. Nije utvrđena očekivana povezanost duljine boravka u inozemnim zemljama i iskazanim sklonostima stereotipiziranju.
Abstract (english) Language and culture are closely interrelated, and learning one of it assumes learning the other one too (Brown, 2007). The best example of this is seen in foreign language classrooms, where besides simply teaching new words and grammar rules, instructors also try to teach foreign culture. Often, stereotypes are seen as an obstacle in this process (Nikitina, 2013) by affecting process of learning and its final results (Schulz, 2007, as cited in Drewelow, 2013). Stereotypes, usually defined as believes one group has of another, are expected to change through contact with members of the stereotyped group (Biernet and Crandall, 1994) or by encountering stereotype disconfirming information (Rothbart, 1981).McCauley and Stitt (1978) adopted probabilistic approach to stereotypes and started using diagnostic ratio (DR) as stereotype measure: DR not equal to one, indicates stereotype believes. Main goal of this study was to assess stereotype tendencies as manifested by students of English and French language and literature at the University of Zadar. Above mentioned diagnostic ratio was used as a stereotyping measure. Participants were asked to rate their own ethnic group, ethnic group of language they study, and one more group. Attributes that students were evaluating were chosen on the basis of the pre-study conducted among the students of the Department of Psychology and students of Department of Culture and tourism at the University of Zadar. Students showed stereotype tendencies towards all target groups in the main study. Croatians were ascribed the highest percentage of all attributes chosen as typical for Croatians on the basis of pre-study. English were ascribed highest percentage of the attribute „cold“ and French of the attribute „romantic“. Students of French and English languages mostly did not differ in their ratings. French students at lower study levels showed higher stereotype tendencies towards French on the attribute „artistic“ compared with French students at higher study levels. Previous visits to English or French speaking countries mostly had no effect on stereotype tendencies in the expected way. The expected relationship between the amount of time spent abroad and the stereotyping tendencies was not observed.
