Abstract
This final thesis deals with the portrayal of women in the sub-genre of horror film, the slasher film. The first slasher was released in the late 1970s and, since then, slasher films gained a lot of popularity. However, slashers are criticised a lot, mainly because most of them are non-innovative and have similar plots. Furthermore, they are often criticised because of how women are represented in them. Many scholars and viewers argue that women are portrayed negatively and falsely. On the other hand, it is important to emphasise that slashers finally introduced a strong female character into the world of horror, the Final Girl, a woman who fights to end prejudices. Slasher films are, therefore, of great interest to many scholars, especially feminists.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj završni rad bavi se prikazom žena u podžanru horora, slasher filmovima. Slasher film se pojavio krajem 1970-ih i otada uživa veliku popularnost među gledateljima. Ipak, često se nalazi i na meti kritičara zbog ponavljanja sličnih scenarija i neinovativnosti. Također, jedna od najčešćih kritika na račun slashera je upravo prikaz žena u ovim filmovima, za koji brojni stručnjaci, ali i sama publika kažu da je negativan i iskrivljen. S druge strane, potrebno je naglasiti i činjenicu da su slasheri napokon u svijet horora uveli i jaki ženski lik, the Final Girl, ženu koja ruši predrasude. Slasheri su stoga veoma zanimljiv materijal za analizu brojnim stručnjacima, posebice feministkinjama.
