Abstract
Howard Hawks is one of the most important and critically recognized directors of the Classical Hollywood cinema. Throughout six decades of his career, Hawks had made films in almost every Hollywood genre, leaving a significant impact in every one of them. This impact, and Hawks’s reputation in general, consist in a specific set of themes and motifs that he developed and presented in these films, transforming the otherwise stereotypical stock of generic features into original and creative works... We argue that the motif of the group represents the key motif through which we can grasp this creative aspect of Hawks’s work, revealing a specific worldview, set of values, a conception of individuals and their motivations. We then use the motif of the group as a standpoint to analyze three Hawks’s films (Rio Bravo, His Girl Friday, Hatari!), and argue that it provides a means to understand and interpret them in a meaningful and significant fashion. Howard Hawks jedan je od najvažnijih i kritički najpriznatijih redatelja klasičnog holivudskog filma. Kroz šest desetljeća karijere, Hawks je snimio filmove u gotovo svakom holivudskom žanru, ostavivši snažan utjecaj u svakome od njih. Taj utjecaj, i Hawksov ugled općenito, sastoje se u specifičnom skupu tema i motiva koje je razvio i izložio u svojim filmovima, transformirajući na taj način stereotipnu zalihu generičnih oblika u originalna i kreativna umjetnička djela. More grupe predstavlja ključni motiv kroz koji možemo zahvatiti taj kreativni aspekt Hawksova djela, otkrivajući specifični pogled na svijet, skup vrijednosti, koncepciju pojedinca i njegovih vrijednosti. Zatim koristimo motiv grupe kao poziciju s koje možemo analizirati tri Hawksova filma (Rio Bravo, Njegova djevojka Petko, Hatari), i tvrdimo kako on predstavlja sredstvo za njihovo smisleno razumijevanje i interpretaciju.
