Abstract
The paper deals with the concepts of space and place in selected works of the American author Howard Phillips Lovecraft (novellas At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow Over Innsmouth and short stories “The Shadow Out of Time”, “The Call of Cthulhu” and “The Colour Out of Space”). As a base for the analysis, the phenomenological approach to place was taken, more specifically the ideas of John Agnew and Tim Cresswell, who proposed the transition location – locale – sense of place through... More which space acquires meaning and becomes place. On specific examples from Lovecraft’s narratives it is demonstrated how place is created and what is its function. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the location and locale provide a background for the events, while the sense of place turns a place into a character able to influence other characters and impact the flow of action. The features of a place as a character are emphasized even more by the properties transmitted onto place by its builders and inhabitants. Less

U ovom radu analizirani su koncepti prostora i mjesta u odabranim djelima američkog autora Howarda Phillipsa Lovecrafta (u novelama Planine ludila i Sjena nad Innsmouthom te u kratkim pričama “Sjena iz vremena”, “Zov Cthulhua” i “Boja iz svemira”). Kao temelj analize uzet je fenomenološki pristup, točnije ideje Johna Agnewa i Tima Cresswella, koji su predložili tranziciju lokacija – scena – osjećaj mjesta, kroz koju prostor dobiva značenje i postaje mjestom. Na specifičnim primjerima iz... More Lovecraftovih djela prikazano je kako nastaje proctor i koje su mu uloge. Analiza je dovela do zaključka da lokacija i scena služe kao podloga za radnju, dok osjećaj mjesta pretvara mjesto u lik koji je sposoban utjecati na druge likove i mijenjati tijek radnje. Svojstva mjesta kao lika još više dolaze do izražaja kroz značajke koje na mjesto prenose njegovi graditelji i stanovnici. Less
