Abstract
Ulaganjem, u obnovljive izvore energije i energetsku učinkovitost, dolazi do smanjenja štetnih emisija u okolišu, otvaranja novih radnih mjesta i povećanja sigurnosti opskrbe energijom.

Parallel abstract (English)
This paper explores, describes and analyzes the Republic of Croatia and European Union with a focus on energy dependence, the construction of a common energy market and ways to increase energy efficiency and effectiveness. Most scientists consider the problem of energy as one of the limiting factors of European future. Non renewable energy sources are going out of use therefore attention should be focused on renewable energy, for witch both the EU and the Republic of Croatia there are many opportunities, but they need to be utilized properly. Therefore, it is important to have a high- quality energy strategy which will enable the exploitation of renewable energy sources in order to reduce energy imports, and thus encourage the creation on new jobs which would be key to economic growth in the Republic of Croatia and other country in EU. Sustainable development should be the main goal of any economy. Sustainable development satisfies needs of modern society without jeopardizing future generations ability to fullfill their needs. Renewable energy sources and energy efficiency are acknowledged worldwide as the best way to achieve aims of sustainable development. Investing in renewable energy sources and energy efficiency decreases harmful emissions in the environment, creates new jobs and increases safer energy supply.
