Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
This paper deals with the analysis of poshlost in Maxim Gorky's short stories. Poshlost represents an exclusively Russian word that carries an extraordinary complex meaning. It deals with aesthetic and social problems. The beginning of this paper introduces the term through its etymological development. This is followed by a thorough analysis of its historical meanings, while examining its different manifestations in the works of specific Russian authors. Using this examples and relevant theoretical works we analyze the mechanisms of poshlost in four short stories by Maxim Gorky: Makar Chudra (1889), Chelkash (1895), Malva (1897), Twenty-six Men and a Girl (1889). A comparative analysis is used to show various overlaps within the sphere of poshlost, while the conclusion binds all findings together.
