Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
Pre-Romanesque art is created in the Christian tradition. Due to changes in liturgy more attention was given to the decoration of liturgical furniture. The iconographic motifs which are carved on them are taken from early Christian mosaics. The most common elements of liturgical furniture that were decorated are ciboria, sanctuary fence, the ambo and the altar. Also their architectural elements such as door frames and navratnici and window frames-transennas were decorated. Floral, zoomorphic and geometric motifs are often combined and have symbolical and allegorical meaning. In Dalmatia the most frequently dominated motifs is threefold wattle which decorated almost all the surface of the stone furniture and architectural elements. Anthropomorphic motifs appear at the end of the pre-Romanesque and are used in the narrative scenes. Using iconographic motifs and the way they are carved they managed to help define some masonry workshops and masters who worked at that time.
